We started our London Tour by visiting Westminster Abbey
What an incredible building. founded in 960 AD
with continued worship on Sunday for over a 1,000 years.
An incredible place of art, many royal weddings and burial for many famous people (Charles Dickens, Shakespeare in poets corner and many royals)
Then we went to the British Museum,
the largest in the world with its 8 million artifacts.
Needless to say we did not see everything.
But we did see the Rosetta Stone
Greece statues
The statue from Easter Island
To end the day we wandered through
Harrods. founded in 1834.
It is huge.
Loved the Buckingham Palace Collection
of teapots and teacups
And the Harrods bear.
Of course we ate fish and chips and mushy peas
on newsprint...
The next day we were on a bus tour to Windsor Castle,
the city of Bath and to Stonehenge
Behind my head it does say 1,000 years.
The Royal Standard was flying which means
Queen Elizabeth was there to greet us!
Behind this Beefeater is St. George's Chapel.
site of the Royal Wedding for 2018
We just missed it.
Onto Bath ~ a World Heritage Site ~
where the Romans started coming here in 60 AD
Then on to Stonehenge,
which is why we took this tour in the first place.
Incredible to see. Founded in the Bronze Age.
(3,000 - 2,000 BC)
They are huge, 13 feet high, and you can't imagine
how they moved them and then placed them
on top of the 13 foot high stones
Every angle was a little different
A Unesco World Heritage Site
Our last day in London, we toured the Tower of London
officially titled:
Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London
Built in 1066 it was a Royal Castle as well as a prison
The White Tower was built by
William the Conqueror in 1078
At one time they did have rare exotic animals living there.
And the Black Raven is a part of a legend that they protect the tower,.
this one was okay that Elwood was getting near him
The chopping block
Took off many heads....
The crown jewels are housed in the Tower of London.
They are incredible.
Coffee break in the Tower.
Old and new collide.
The Tower and the Shard poking into the sky
The River Thames
overcast day but no rain.
Then on to the Charles Dickens Museum,
Elwood's favorite author
The desk where many of his stories were written
All his books handwritten.
In there son's room they had quotes from his book all over the walls.
It was great.
On to St. Paul's Cathedral
And then the famous Borough Market.
It was near the end of the day,
closing.
A cute pub and hotel.
