Dala-Järna & Falun

We arrived in Dala-Järna Monday early evening.

A beautiful drive through the Swedish countryside.

Supper in Rune's home

The next morning Mats picked us up and we drove to Falun and went through the Falun Mine
A World Heritage site but also a place his grandfather had mentioned many times.

A huge copper mine 400 meters deep

It was cold.  We dressed warm

Then got on our rain coats and helmets.

And headed down the steps to the mine

It was dark.  Hard to imagine what a difficult task
it would be to work everyday in this dark, damp setting.

Their 'elevator'.
The men would have one foot on the pail and
hold on to the rope and be lowered down.

Or climb down the ladders

The King & Queens through the centuries visited the mine
and signed their names on the wall

Mats & Elwood in the dark!

The famous goat named Kåre who found the copper.
He came home one day with his horns covered in red dust.
It was from the copper ~ thus the mine was discovered.

Surrounded by stone

Ancient money - dated 1644
Old Falun

The Falun church

And the ski jump preparing for the World Cup Ski 2014

Mats & Elwood with a picture of Gunde Svan, a classmate of Mats.

Then on to Sundborn to the home of Carl & Karin Larsson, a very famous Swedish artist.
We had lunch in their garden.  Delicious!

In the evening, Anders and us walked to the Dala-Järna airport.
A acrobatic pilot was doing maneuvers.
Our own private airshow.
